The National museum of underwater archaeology is an agency of the ministry of culture with specific responsibilities for carrying out the policy of the ministry about underwater heritage.
The museum co-operates with different Spanish regional governments in the management of underwater archaeological heritage.
Also after ratification by the Spanish government on the 6th July 2005, the UNESCO international convention on the protection of underwater cultural heritage, approved in Paris on 2nd November 2001.
The museum is obliged to assume and honour the goals and purposes of the convention.
