Cabo de Palos
El Mosqui
Subida al Faro, 50
Cabo de Palos
Murcia
Phone: 968 564 563
Famous for its Calderos, a rice dish made with fish stock and, unlike most rice and paella dishes, served before the stock has evaporated, almost as a rice-fish soup. Not for the delicate eater, Caldero has quite a strong fishy taste. But if you are adventurous and enjoy seafood, El Mosqui is your best bet. Simple restaurant, good service, very popular with locals and quite cheap prices.

End Paseo de la Barra. "Balcony over the port". Good fish. Try the "long and narrow" trial menu (in theory, "many dishes, small quantities"). Really, El Pez Rojo offers generous portions in his excellent trial menu. Located on the harbour front.

Tradition in good fish and rices. Its dish "Rice La Tana" (a "caldero" type rice made with minced squids and shrimps, with no heads and no bones) is delicious. Good paella at lunchtime.

This restaurant is a 10-minutes drive from Murcia and is well worth a visit. Set in a 17th century building originally built as a wine bodega and then used as a silk factory. Tastefully decorated, this is an elegant restaurant specialised in modern cuisine using local ingredients. One of the most pricey restaurants in the region (menu degustacion costs 70 euros), but also one of the most elegant.

Regional cooking, including caldero marinero del Mar Menor (a typical seafood casserole). The vegetable paella and the gilthead cooked in salt are also delicious. Good selection or regional wines.

Monteagudo
Avenida de la Constitución, 93
30160 Murcia
Phone: 96 885 0064
This restaurant is well worth the 6km. drive from Murcia (along the motorway). Attractive decor, friendly and professional service, a very good wine list with some interesting local wines (ask the waiter for advice according to what you order and how much you want to spend) and, most importantly, excellent food. Traditional dishes given a modern touch and made with first class local produce. Both meat and fish dishes are recommendable, as are the delicious grilled vegetables. And make sure you leave room for the the warm chocolate soufflé.
